Dürer to Van Dyck

Design of this spectacular winter exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy which showcases over 50 rare drawings and watercolours by some of the world’s greatest artists: Dürer, Holbein, Rubens, Rembrandt and Van Dyck. The exhibition offered a unique opportunity to view the works, many never before displayed in Scotland.

Housed across four galleries, the displays take a thematic approach with interpretation exploring drawing techniques and materials. Individual stories give visitors greater insight into the creative processes of the artists and the historical context of their work. We designed a serene and intimate environment, with low lux levels, to enable visitors to immerse themselves in the exquisite texture, subtle shading and striking precision of these exceptional works. Our colour palette, inspired by the colours in the drawings themselves, ranges from warm golden tones to deep ink-black hues reflecting the mood, theme and narrative of each space. With strong visual appeal, the exhibition attracted a wide audience from international tourists to local visitors.

Creating Context

The first gallery includes a reception area, retail shop, introduction and drawing corner. To introduce the exhibition, we enlarged details from some of the featured drawings and printed them floor-to-ceiling, creating a highly impactful visual experience. This striking presentation highlights the intricate line work and quality of the drawings, sparking curiosity and raising anticipation of the works themselves. A dedicated drawing corner invites visitors to get creative, offering a space to make their own artwork and share it with others, providing a fun and interactive experience for all ages and abilities.

“This exhibition of drawings from Chatsworth House at the Royal Scottish Academy is packed with treasures and a paean to the immediacy of the form.”
